FCC Likely to Review Media Ownership Rules.

Sep. 12--WASHINGTON--The media industry's ardor for mergers could flare again soon if federal regulators do as expected Thursday and begin a review of six rules restraining ownership of broadcast stations and networks.

The rules, some dating back to the 1940s, were put in place with congressional direction to keep a handful of media giants from dominating local news markets. As new television and radio stations and new networks went on the air over the years, most of the rules were watered down.

Thursday's Federal Communications Commission meeting marks the first time regulators could start down the road toward eliminating the rules entirely.
