Hilmar, Calif., Cheese Company Has Problems with Wastewater Smell.

Sep. 12--HILMAR, Calif.--There's an aroma rolling through the streets of Hilmar these days, but it's not the usual fragrance of milk being processed into cheese and whey.

Instead, folks in this dairy town are breathing in a somewhat foul -- though safe -- odor.

The source of the smell is the Hilmar Cheese Co., which processes 9 million pounds of milk -- 180 tanker loads -- each day.

"Our wastewater treatment facility is not meeting our expectations," said Michelle Peterson, communications manager for Hilmar Cheese. "We're aware of it and we're working to fix it."
