Strike by Pierce County, Wash., Garbage Haulers Looms after Negotiations End.

Sep. 27--Negotiations between garbage haulers who pick up trash for about 40 percent of the homes and businesses in Pierce County and Waste Connections have broken off. The contract expires Monday night.

This could lead to a garbage-hauling strike next Tuesday that could eventually involve most of the garbage collection in the county, union officials said.

Rick Payne, secretary-treasurer for Teamsters Local 313, said Thursday that talks broke off this week when Waste Connections negotiators left the bargaining table. No new negotiations are scheduled over the weekend, Payne said.
