Study Shows Diversity among American Media Outlets, Consumers.

Oct. 2--WASHINGTON--Americans have more sources of news and are more diversified news consumers than in the past, according to a series of studies released Tuesday by the Federal Communications Commission.

About one in five Americans now gets national and local news from the Internet, and 5.9 percent say it is their primary news source, according to a survey by Nielsen Media Research Inc.

The FCC's staff, meanwhile, found that the number of media outlets has increased nearly threefold in the last 40 years, while the number of media owners has more than doubled.
