Sun Microsystems Changes Course, Will Offer Solaris for Intel-Based PCs.

Oct. 5--Bowing to user demands, Sun Microsystems said Friday that it would make its Solaris 9 operating system available for computers that use Intel-compatible processors. But unlike previous versions, users will have to pay for the new software.

The Santa Clara computer maker's decision reverses its earlier plan, announced in January, to stop developing software for Intel-compatible chips.

Back then, Sun said it wasn't cost-effective for it to provide the necessary technical support for those who wanted to use its Solaris operating system on standard personal computers that use chips from Intel or Advanced Micro Devices.
