King County, Wash., Judge Orders Collection Agency to Pay in Frivolous Case.

Oct. 8--It was payback time yesterday for an overzealous collection agency that was ordered to pay attorney's fees for a woman it hauled into court over an 18-cent debt.

Associated Credit Service (ACS) must pay more than $7,800 to Amanda Lee, the lawyer who fought the 18-cent suit in King County District Court. Judge Eileen Kato ruled that the lawsuit was frivolous and violated the Consumer Protection Act.

"It's basically a big no-no to file a lawsuit when you don't have a legitimate claim," Lee said yesterday.
