Outlook of Nation's Airlines Isn't Brightening, Analysts Say.

Oct. 9--The only bit of bright news to come lately from the nation's major airlines -- a 26.3 percent bump in passenger traffic last month -- comes with a big asterisk.

The comparable year-ago month was disastrous, as all commercial aviation was grounded after the terrorist attacks. In fact, Sept. 11 will skew year-over-year comparisons for months to come.

A true measure of the industry's pulse, analysts say, requires a sobering look back two years. In September 2000, the industry flew 10.2 percent more traffic and at airfares that were 15 percent higher.
