Pierce County, Wash., Garbage Haulers Begin Strike; Company Hires Replacements.

Oct. 8--Garbage haulers who serve about 65,000 customers in Pierce County walked off the job Monday, launching the first South Sound garbage strike industry experts can recall.

About 50 garbage haulers set up pickets around the Fife yard that is the headquarters for D.M., American and Murrey's disposal companies.

But when haulers arrived at the yard early Monday morning after a 5 a.m. vote to approve a strike, they found that Waste Connections already had locked the workers out and put security staff in place. Replacement drivers had departed with the trucks.
