Oct. 15--CSFB may halve pay and bonuses, warns Oswald Gruebel, co-chief executive of the troubled investment bank's Swiss parent. More job losses are also expected. Boss John Mack "the Knife" last week warned of 1,750 redundancies. Some 3,000 jobs are on the line at rival JP Morgan, which issued a slew of P45s yesterday. Merrill Lynch is reported to be poised to dismiss 300 of its 1,300 investment bankers.

BRUSSELS IS INVESTIGATING whether the French state gave UKpound 630 million in illegal subsidies to privatisation candidate EdF, parent of UK utilities Seeboard, London Electricity and SWEB. The inquiry will take 18 months.
