Waste Disposal Firm to Pay Fine for Violating U.S. Pollution Rules.

Oct. 15--An Indianapolis hazardous waste disposal company has agreed to pay $360,000 for violating federal air pollution and hazardous waste rules.

Heritage Environmental Services, on the city's Westside, was sued by the Department of Justice on March 20, 2000, for failing to adequately calculate, monitor and report the amount of benzene in its waste stream.

The lawsuit also claimed the company did not adequately control emissions from tanks in which benzene was stored, or manage and treat the waste.

Although officials know the company exceeded the amount of benzene it was supposed to have at the site, there is no way to know how much benzene was...
