Illinois Man with Heart of Gold Gives Kidney to Stranger, Raises Ethics Issues.

Oct. 22--Two years ago, Bill Van Pelt called doctors at the University of Chicago Hospitals with an unusual, almost unheard-of request: He wanted to donate one of his kidneys to someone--anyone, it really didn't matter whom.
One of the hospitals' first responses was to have Van Pelt talk with a psychologist to see if he was in his right mind. But U. of C. officials found that Van Pelt, a 41-year-old FedEx courier, was just a normal man with a crazy urge to help save a complete stranger's life by sacrificing one of his vital organs.
