Bush's Move to Lower Drug Prices Hailed, Attacked.

Oct. 22--With soaring healthcare costs worrying many voters, President Bush's preelection bid to lower drug prices was cheered Monday by generic drug manufacturers but was met with suspicion by some consumer advocates.

Bush's plan, announced Monday, is to speed lower-cost generic drugs to market by limiting the ways that branded drug companies can delay the process.

"A positive first step," said Elliot F. Hahn, president of Andrx, a Davie manufacturer of generics. "A major step forward," said Neil Flanzraich, president of IVAX, a Miami firm that also markets generics. Both firms have gone through lengthy legal battles to get generics to market.
