Casino Boats Lose Foe in Deal between Port, North Charleston, S.C.

Oct. 29--Last week's deal to divide the former Navy base may have put an end to one of North Charleston's more contentious issues while holding the door open for another to re-emerge.

Casino boats, a controversial topic that once packed City Hall with scores of folks both for and against them, drew a one-sentence mention in the deal between North Charleston and the State Ports Authority.

While one sentence isn't much out of a 15-page agreement, this one guarantees that the port -- which historically has stopped gambling boats from docking at its facilities -- will not interfere with the city if it permits the boats on its share of the base....
