BBC Hopes Thirty Free Channels Can Save Digital Dream.

Oct. 31--The BBC yesterday launched its digital revolution amid criticism at the billions of pounds it will cost licence-payers.

In a fanfare of publicity the corporation and its partner BSkyB switched on Freeview, a free terrestrial digital service offering up to 30 TV channels and 12 radio stations for the price of a set-top adaptor, costing around UKpound 99.

The BBC said it had received "thousands" of inquiries about Freeview in the first few hours. It claims it is the simplest way to access digital television and is targeting the 2 million consumers who, according to surveys, want digital but are not prepared to pay subscriptions to satellite or cable...
