Identity Theft Will Likely Increase; Guarding Personal Data Can Cut Down Risk.

Nov. 27--Now more than ever, consumers must guard their personal financial information to avoid being the victim of what the FBI calls the fastest-growing crime - identity theft.
At the Federal Trade Commission, identity fraud is the "fastest-rising category of complaints in our database," spokeswoman Claudia Bourne Farrell said Tuesday. "It is taking over the complaint database."
Ms. Farrell said the FTC had been swamped with calls after the news Monday that federal authorities in New York had broken up an identity-theft ring that stole the credit histories of more than 30,000 people. Authorities say the ring used the information to break into bank accounts,...
