Redfield, S.D., Business to Help Resurrect McCormick Tractor Brand Name.

Nov. 25--REDFIELD, S.D.--In the history of U.S. farm equipment, the names of three people stand out -- John Deere, Cyrus McCormick and J.I. Case.

In 1837 Deere invented the first self-scouring steel plow, which greatly aided in the development of states like South Dakota. Prairie sod did not roll off the cast iron plows used in the sandier soils in the eastern United States. But sod fell easily from Deere's plows, and served to keep them shiny.

McCormick invented the first reaper, used for the first time in the harvest of 1831. He became a world celebrity in 1851 when he received the Gold Medal at London's Crystal Palace Exhibition for his inventions....
