Bush Administration Eases Rules Governing Industrial Air Pollution.

Nov. 23--The Bush administration on Friday relaxed rules that had forced industries to cut air pollution, stirring a storm of protests from critics who said Americans' health will be endangered.

Officials said that changing the rules governing emissions from new or upgraded power plants, refineries, steel mills and other plants, called new source review, would help prevent energy shortages and boost the economy without sacrificing air quality.

"The need for reform is clear and has broad-based support," said Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christie Whitman.
