Careless Handling of Bioengineered Crops Causes Vast Repercussions in Industry.

Nov. 22--The few lonely cornstalks in a Nebraska soybean field looked like so many other wayward stalks that pop up in farmers' fields.

But these experimental stalks were anything but ordinary. They were genetically engineered to carry a vaccine against a virus that infects pigs -- part of a promising low-cost, high-tech method to produce plentiful drugs and chemicals.

Biotechnology companies including Monsanto Co. of Creve Coeur hope to use such plants to make new chemotherapy drugs, human antibodies, blood thinners, vaccines, contraceptives and other medicines, anti-bacterial compounds and a host of industrial chemicals.
