Retailers Hang On to Cautious Holiday-Sale Optimism in Face of Shy Consumers.

Nov. 22--As she plans her holiday shopping, Leah Arteaga of Boston's Roslindale neighborhood is glad her children are so young -- one is 5, the other 15 months.
"Sure, absolutely, I'll be spending less for Christmas," said Arteaga, the office manager of a dermatology practice and the wife of a contractor whose specialties include building home additions.
"Thankfully, our kids are so little they won't know the difference. If my little guy gets eight things under the tree, he'll be as happy as a pig in mud. If they were a little older, 10 or 12, I might not be able to get away with that without disappointing them."
