Nov. 22--It's not easy to mess with a successful product, but Subaru has done it with its Forester -- and pulled it off.

There's just enough "different" about the latest version to entice new buyers into the small SUV market, one of the toughest, most crowded automotive segments. Yet it also has kept just enough of the older version that its big pool of owners wouldn't be turned off and head for other car dealerships.

I usually think of Subaru's Outbacks and Foresters as being something like the L.L. Bean products of their respective markets, and this year's Forester is no different. It's outdoorsy, low key and sporty enough to be a four-wheeled...
