Nov. 14--Home buyers sweat a lot of details: Does the basement flood? Are the pipes rusty? Is the garage big enough for the SUV?

Few ask, "Will I break a hip on those uneven porch steps when I reach the osteoporosis years?"

Or, "Will I be able to turn on that faucet when my hands are curled by arthritis?"

To encourage people to think long term when they buy a home, AARP and an architectural think tank are inviting builders, health-care workers, and everyday folks to a new demonstration house in Atlantic City.
