University of Florida Researchers Discover West Nile Virus in Alligators.

Nov. 14--You might think the alligator, with its scaly underbelly and rough dinosaur skin, would be the last creature to contract the West Nile virus.
But researchers at the University of Florida have discovered the mosquito-borne disease in three alligators from east Orange County, a finding that will take months and possibly years of research to comprehend.
"People might be surprised to find that mosquitoes bite alligators, too," said Lisa Conti, state public-health veterinarian with the Florida Department of Health.
But it's hard to say just how the blood-sucking insects get through the reptile's rough, tough and thick hide.
