Nov. 3--Outside the blond-wood corporate headquarters of Recreational Equipment Inc. in Kent, Dennis Madsen jumps from rock to rock, dodging a small stream on the company commons.
Madsen's 6-foot-5-inch frame is rail-thin, agile and limber. He bounces among the rocks like a child skipping along the sidewalk.
Obliging a photographer for an unusual pose, Madsen is clearly at ease climbing.
He has a passion for the outdoors, whether it's skiing, biking or trekking in Nepal. Colleagues say he's a rarity among CEOs, making his fun time and his day job virtually interchangeable -- for nearly four decades.
