Thai Farmers' Group to Sell Off or Lease Five Unused Silos.

Nov. 6--The Marketing Organisation for Farmers (MOF) plans to sell some of its 11 farm silos after two decades of unsuccessful operations.

The state agency came under fire recently in a report by the Auditor General. Built 20 years ago at a cost of 250 million baht, the silos were intended to store up to 40,000 tons of maize under a government scheme to improve farmers' bargaining power.

MOF director Sanchai Prasurdsuwan said the agency would take two months to assess its silo project but he agreed that many of the silos have not been used properly. Farmers were not interested in drying and keeping the grain in silos but preferred using open-air drying...
