Edsel's Failure a Matter of Timing for Ford.

Nov. 17--Despite its long list of recalls, the Focus is in no danger of becoming the next "Edsel" for Ford Motor Co.
Edsel, the name Ford gave a mid-price car and separate division from 1958 to 1960, is frequently but incorrectly attached to products that suffer from poor quality.
Though the Edsel was a colossal failure, John Biel, editor of Collectible Automobile, said the car's quality was "no better or worse than Fords or Mercurys" of that era and not the cause of its demise.
"It wasn't that the car was a disaster, but what made it an `Edsel' was the whole business plan behind it," Biel said, noting that the Edsel's short life ended long before safety or...
