Federal Probe of Martha Stewart Stalls; SEC Faces Tough Fight on Civil Suit.

Nov. 21--The insider trading investigation of Martha Stewart is on the back burner for now, sources familiar with the case said yesterday.

The criminal probe has been put on hold as federal prosecutors wait for a decision by the Securities and Exchange Commission on a potential civil suit against Stewart, the sources said.

But the SEC hasn't acted because of a blazing counterattack on its claims launched by Stewart's platoon of lawyers.

"They responded with ... what they consider to be a logical explanation," one source said, who described the response as extensive.
