Dec. 1--As Houston voters look ahead to the 2003 mayor's race, potential candidates are examining their own pasts and asking themselves the same question.

Can they capitalize on their strengths, and downplay their weaknesses, as they plot to replace term-limited Mayor Lee Brown?

At least five already are aligning themselves with political gurus, wooing supporters and developing issues for what likely will be the most expensive campaign in Houston history.
