AES Corp.'s Debt Puts Indianapolis Power & Light's Future in Doubt.

Dec. 1--The future direction of AES Corp. could hinge on a decision by a group of its creditors expected Tuesday, as the struggling power company tries to work off billions of dollars in debt to avoid possible bankruptcy.

Tied to the fate of the struggling Virginia power company could be that of Indianapolis Power & Light Co., which was bought by AES for $3 billion in March 2001.

Officials at IPL steadfastly maintain that AES' debt problems have no effect on the daily operations of the local utility, which they say remains deeply committed to Indianapolis. But industry analysts say an AES bankruptcy filing could lead to yet another sale of IPL, one of AES'...
