Due to Decline, Auto Makers May Offer Sweeter Year-End Clearance Sales.

Dec. 4--Consumers went Christmas shopping instead of buying new vehicles last month as auto makers reported a 9 percent decline compared with the year-earlier month.

With sales on the skids, auto makers may roll out even sweeter deals in December in a year-end grab for market share.

While GM doesn't expect to substantially boost incentives in December, Paul Ballew, GM's market analyst, noted that Toyota and Honda traditionally hold year-end clearance sales, and other manufacturers will do the same.

"We will respond accordingly," Ballew said. "I think December will be a very interesting month."
