Short-Term Outlook Bright for Semiconductor Industry.

Dec. 6--SAN FRANCISCO -- Two high-tech bellwethers, Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc., yesterday brightened the semiconductor industry's short-term outlook by raising their revenue forecasts for the current quarter.

Intel, the world's largest semiconductor maker, and its smaller rival AMD reported unexpectedly strong sales of microprocessors for personal computers and flash memory chips for cellphones. The announcements, joined by an improved revenue forecast from Fairchild Semiconductor, which makes chips for a wide range of products, support the view shared by many industry observers that chip sales are gradually recovering after a 35 percent plunge in sales...
