International Space-Station Members Agree to Expand Number of Residents.

Dec. 9--CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Partners in the international space-station project have agreed to expand the number of residents living aboard the outpost to more than three by as early as 2006.

While the specific timetable and crew size has yet to be determined, heads of the U.S., Russian, European, Japanese and Canadian space agencies agreed in principle to the increase during a Friday meeting in Tokyo with the goal of accelerating research aboard the station. The crew size now is limited to three, the number of people who can fit into the Russian Soyuz capsule docked to the outpost as an emergency escape ship.
