National Geographic Sells Its Photos Online.

Dec. 13--Little do they know it, but Canadian polar bears help businesses sell everything from chemicals to insurance. Japanese geishas are used to promote airline vacations and ancient cave drawings to depict the ingenuity of a telecom company.

Those are just a few of more than 10,000 images that the National Geographic Society is selling in a new online archive aimed at sharply boosting the revenue derived from its collection. The images are marketed primarily to businesses for use in advertising campaigns.

DuPont bought the image of polar bears, United Airlines purchased the geisha photo and France Telecom bought the cave pictures.
