Sales Tax Pushed in Orange County, Fla., as Fix for Traffic Problems.

Dec. 13--Orange County residents may be asked to go to the polls as early as May to approve a 20-year half-cent sales-tax increase to help pay for $8.7 billion in area transportation improvements.

In a draft report released Thursday, the Chairman's Transportation Commission said the money would be used to widen Interstate 4 and other major arteries in Orange County, finance commuter- and light-rail train systems and purchase environmentally endangered lands.

The key to the plan is a $2.6 billion sales-tax increase that voters could be asked to approve next spring, nine months after they approved a similar half-cent boost for school construction. Money from...
