Analysts Say Deep Discounters, High-End Retailers Best Off This Holiday Season.

Dec. 15--Carleen Flach couldn't make up her mind.

On a display case at the Saks Fifth Avenue store in Plaza Frontenac were Flach's final selections: a $600 pair of earrings and a $900 necklace. Her husband, Ronald, watched carefully. After all, he'd be paying for one.

In fact, it's his second Christmas present to his wife. Carleen lost the ring he had bought her.

"I think she just misplaced it," said Ronald, a retired teacher from Belleville and a regular Saks shopper. "That's why we're getting something different--in case she finds it. Then, she'll have something for the next holiday."
