Interim Chief Executive of Irish Pharmaceutical Firm Soon to Hand Over Reins.

Dec. 18--To hear Garo Armen describe it, there really wasn't much choice when the board of troubled Irish pharmaceutical maker Elan Corp. asked him to lead the company as chairman and interim chief executive.

Armen, an Elan director, already had his own company to run: Antigenics Inc., the Woburn firm with a promising cancer vaccine in phase 3 trials and a suite of other products in the pipeline. He had a full life commuting between his home on Long Island, Antigenics' executive suite in New York City, and Massachusetts.

And the task itself wasn't exactly a plum: fixing a once high-flying pharmaceutical industry star whose shares quickly collapsed when investors...
