Riverside, Calif.-Area Post Offices Cope during Season's Busiest Mailing Day.

Dec. 17--Chocolate in boxes, toys in parcels and cards galore got weighed, stamped and shipped off Monday, the nation's busiest mailing day.

The U.S. Postal Service estimated 850 million pieces of mail were mailed Monday, the busiest day during a holiday season which accounts for 20 billion pieces of mail nationwide, said George Marsh, a postal spokesman.

Inland residents were out in force, bearing boxes filled with goodies for relatives.

"If you're mailing toys, take the batteries out," Marsh said.

"Sometimes a toy has a way of starting up, and if we have a package that's vibrating or making strange sounds, that's not good."...
