Bombay Co. Hires 'Sales Guy' As Newest Executive.

Dec. 18--James Carreker says he has a pretty good idea of how to make the Bombay Co. a more successful retailer after two years of watching its principal competitor close up.
Carreker, hired Monday as the new nonexecutive chairman of Bombay, said the Fort Worth company needs to emulate the performance of crosstown rival Pier 1 Imports by improving its merchandising and marketing efforts.
In an interview Tuesday, Carreker said that Bombay can boost sales and profits by moving its stores from inside malls into adjacent strip centers and speeding up the opening of Bombay Kids stores nearby.
