BellSouth Given Permission to Sell Long Distance Service in Florida.

Dec. 20--Federal regulators handed BellSouth Corp. permission Thursday to sell long-distance phone service in Florida, setting the stage for a major battle as the giant company enters a market now dominated by AT&T, WorldCom and other long-distance carriers.

The Federal Communications Commission's decision ends an era in which BellSouth was blocked from selling long distance to residential and business customers in its nine-state region. Starting Dec. 30, BellSouth plans to offer new communications packages that it says will save its Florida customers hundreds of million of dollars.
