Orange County, Fla., Sales Tax to Increase for School-Building Program.

Dec. 31--If you're planning a big night on the town New Year's Eve, you may want to settle your bill before midnight.

Come Jan. 1, Orange County's sales tax increases by a half-penny -- from 6 cents to 6.5 cents on the dollar -- for a multibillion-dollar program to renovate and build schools.

Orange is among six Florida counties that approved local-option sales-tax increases in voter referendums this past fall. The others are Leon, Manatee, Marion, Miami-Dade and Putnam.

In Orange, the extra half-cent on every dollar spent means the tax on a $60 DVD player will increase from $3.60 to $3.90. The tax on a $30 pair of jeans will increase from $1.80...
