Bargain Hunters Fail to Boost Prices on London Stock Exchange.

Dec. 28--They knocked 2 percent off prices, but bargain hunters failed to turn up in the City yesterday. The FTSE 100 index of blue-chip shares fell 112.7 to 3829.4 amid deepening gloom about war and the world economy.

Screens turned a very unfestive red. But volumes were desperately thin.

"It's pitiful," said one trader. "We've done less volume than we would normally do in the first half an hour. No one's around. I don't know why we're open. I'm just sitting here drinking Bollinger."

The word is most big money boys are taking an extended break, until Monday week, to recover from another disastrous year on the markets. But there will be little cheer on...
