Senator Daschle of South Dakota Won't Run for President.

Jan. 8--Using less fanfare than many politicians announce petty grants with, Tom Daschle said Tuesday that he won't run for president.

The move was stunning, leaving aides and supporters without an explanation. Daschle, South Dakota's senior senator and the Democratic leader in that chamber, spent the weekend traveling the state, meeting with residents and telling them he was leaning toward a presidential bid in 2004.

He announced his decision not to run via press release Tuesday morning.

Requests by the American News to speak to him were declined.
