Microsoft Offers Upgrades for Digital Audio, Video Software.

Jan. 8--Microsoft Corp. is launching major upgrades of its digital audio and video software -- just in time to undercut new-product announcements from rival Apple Computer Inc. at the annual Macworld trade show, which began yesterday in San Francisco.

Apple has long touted the digital audio and video features of its Macintosh computers as a key selling point. Yesterday, though, Microsoft shined the spotlight on its own offerings, releasing a new version of Windows Media Player, a music and video player that is included free with the Windows operating system.
