Second-Largest Massachusetts Health Insurer to Lay Off over 70 Workers.

Jan. 10--The state's second-largest health insurer, Tufts Health Plan, will lay off between 70 and 80 employees this month, part of a strategy to reduce administrative costs at a time of soaring insurance premiums.

The layoffs will occur in nearly every department, including operations, finance, sales and marketing, and member services, said spokeswoman Julie Rosen. One-third of the layoffs will be employees who work for Secure Horizons, the plan's Medicare health maintenance organization, which is shrinking in numbers of members and doctors.
