Jan. 11--Whoever buys the Dallas Stars also gets a stake in a National Hockey League that's struggling with teams on financial thin ice.
The Ottawa Senators, saddled with $160 million in debt, filed for bankruptcy Thursday and turned to the league for cash. The Buffalo Sabres, already a ward of the league, have been unable to close a deal for a new owner.
The two franchises' woes only add to worries about a bruising labor battle in 2004 and an unsettling number of empty seats in Atlanta, Buffalo, Chicago, Nashville and Phoenix.
