Alcatel Stock Soars on Expectations of Climbing Fourth-Quarter Sales.

Jan. 15--Rare glimmers of good news shined down on the telecommunications industry Tuesday by way of Paris.

Alcatel SA's announcement that its fourth-quarter sales will climb by close to 30 percent from the previous quarter sent the company's stock soaring and got some analysts to use "telecommunications" and the "R" word -- recovery -- in the same breath.

The French company with U.S. headquarters in Plano said it did a surprisingly brisk business of selling broadband and wireless gear in the fourth quarter, typically its best of the year.
