Jan. 15--LEESBURG, Fla.--Representatives of more than 600 residents surrounding Silver Lake, a single-home community outside Leesburg's city limits, lost their battle with the city this week when the commission agreed to annex almost 10 acres of nearby land for 120 upscale apartments.

Silver Lake residents call the development an "octopus tentacle" that will eventually strangle the quiet independence of their small community. But Leesburg city commissioners say the development could bring the city an additional $36,000 a year in tax revenue and $180,000 in water and wastewater utility fees.
