NASA Raises Level of Security at Kennedy Space Center to New Heights.

Jan. 16--CAPE CANAVERAL -- This morning's launch of the space shuttle Columbia -- one of the highest-profile flights in years -- will be shrouded in security.

But while officials at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration admit to heightened sensitivity because of the presence of Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, they insist that the precautions are no greater than those taken in wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Ramon's involvement in the 16-day research mission does present a unique threat to the shuttle, said David Saleeba, NASA's assistant administrator for security management, because of the volatile situation in the Middle East.
