Jan. 28--Upstart telephone company Sage Telecom Inc. will begin selling local service to Wisconsin residential and business consumers next week.
Sage, a Texas company started in 1996, will join the list of carriers that sell retail service by paying wholesale rates to use the SBC Wisconsin network.
Baby Bell companies such as SBC Communications Inc. are required to provide competitors network access in exchange for gaining permission to sell long-distance services.
Sage is a privately held company that has attracted backing from outside investors, including $30 million last fall from Summit Partners, a Boston venture capital firm.
