Worldwide Virus Attack Cripples Penn State, Pa., University Computer Systems.

Jan. 28--UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--An electronic infection that delayed Internet traffic worldwide Saturday also choked Penn State computer systems, shutting down a university network and numerous servers over the weekend.

"When there's one of these worldwide attacks, Penn State's just as vulnerable as anybody else," said university spokesman Bill Mahon.

Called the "SQL Slammer," the electronic worm made its way into vulnerable Microsoft computer servers and generated massive amounts of Internet activity. The strain affected Web browsing, e-mail delivery and some automated-teller machines.
