Commission to Propose Only Minor Tweaks to Title IX Law.

Jan. 31--WASHINGTON--A federal advisory commission yesterday approved only modest changes to a landmark law requiring schools to provide equal opportunities for male and female athletes.

Women's sports advocates had feared the commission would weaken Title IX, the law they credit with dramatically expanding female participation in sports, but the panel -- missing one member -- deadlocked on a key vote.

"Some will say it went too far, some will say it didn't go far enough," said Gene DeFilippo, the athletic director at Boston College and a member of the Commission on Athletic Opportunity. "Everyone on the commission wanted to be fair to both male and female...
